1879 Trade Dollar

Hi

Could someone give me some insight into whether this "trade dollar" is genuine? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Matt -- Your coin has a CC (Carson City) mint mark on the reverse, under the eagle. There were no genuine 1879CC trade dollars issued, so yours must be a counterfeit. Except for the banner over the eagle's head, the patterns and inscriptions look like a real trade dollar. But the CC mint mark makes it a fake.

Apparently someone tried to sell a coin like yours on eBay, but was caught. See this page over in Coin Community:

  • Hi Richard,

Many thanks. I have a few of these. They are rare in Britain (I've never seen them before). Is there a list of which years have CC issues, as a few have that mark?
