Kennedy half dollar
Coin has extra date stamps on front 1960 and 1985 and has minting imperfections on back in the words united and America. Was just wondering if I had a coin worth anything?
Hi Kevin - these are old "gimmick" coins sold by a guy wanting to make some quick buck. He took these regular Kennedy half-dollars, counter-stamped them with dates (1960 and 1985 is just one: he also did other combinations), and then electroplated them with either gold or silver.
I think the idea was to create gifts for people wanting to celebrate different anniversaries. I'm not sure.
They were originally sold at $5.99 a piece!
Today they are worth what it says on them - 50 cents.
This thread on TreasureNet talks about them. If you scroll down a bit on that page, you can see an old newspaper page advertising the 1960-1980 type, meant to celebrate JFK's 20th electoral anniversary.
