Charlotte -- My guess is that it is a medieval coin from India. Check it against the coins on this page. See if one fits closely.

Paul Richards thanks Paul! None looked quite right but then I found this: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ancient-indian-copper-bronze-coins-247338775 -very very similar to the middle coin in that picture.

Yes. The picture on worthpoint shows a nice collection of old Indian coppers. The one in the middle is close, but not an exact match. Both you and I need a person who can read inscriptions like this, but I have been unable to find such a person.
