1878 CC Morgan Silver Dollar

Considering putting this coin up for auction.  Trying to determine actual grade and whether to invest by sending to NGC for grading.  Any feedback most appreciated.
Thanks  Paul

  • Hi Paul --

It's a good date. Just about all CC Morgans are "can't go wrong" coins.

Looking at the grade, the amount of wear is low, about XF-40 I would say, but your coin has a severe mottled appearance. This will lower "net" grade at least two levels, to F-12.

Looking at the PCGS price guide, 1878CC in F-12 catalogs at $225. Catalog price is always inflated (unless the coin has superb eye appeal). Checking eBay, the coin sells to collectors between $150 and $200.

IMO, a retail price of $200 does not justify slabbing.
