Tetradrachm of Nero

I’m guessing it’s not worth all that much but just thought I’d ask. I don’t know anything about coins. Or is it fake! Because I looked up coins of Nero online and couldn’t find any that looked like this.

  • That's Nero, alright. Did he really fiddle as Rome burned? He looks nasty enough to do it!

The coin in my first picture is similar to yours. It sold for $90 US dollars. Here is the description from its auction listing:

Laureate bust right, wearing aegis / ETOYΣ AIP • Θ, eagle standing right, wings displayed, on thunderbolt; • and palm frond to right. McAlee 261; RPC I 4185; Prieur 85. Find patina, scratch on obverse. Near VF.

My second coin is in better condition. It sold for $300. Yours is probably worth between those two numbers.

  • Oh cool. Thanks so much for helping. It means a lot, because I’m only just starting to learn about ancient coinage.

Yes, it sounds like he thought he was at an awesome bonfire night with a few casual beers. Such a madman.
