  • Amber -- It looks like that quarter has been through a mutilation machine! Many times, novice metal workers and machinists practice on coins. It looks like your coin was put in a lathe and deformed with a tool of some type.

    This is what we call "post mint damage" because it was imparted to the coin after it left the mint. Coins with PMD are worth zero.

    "Error coins" are coins that have abnormalities imparted during the minting process. These are valuable. Some examples appear here:
